Here I'm demonstrating Da
Lu (informal translation:“big rollback” or “great
yielding/redirecting”) Assisting is my colleague, Sifu
Jeff Daniel.
It is one of many two-person training exercises, similar
to push hands (tui shou), but with a more expansive
stepping pattern. Here’s what it emphasizes:
Application of Lü (¥ / rollback): Lü is one of the four
primary Taiji energies (Peng, Lü, Ji, An). It means to
neutralize by leading the opponent’s force away.
Da (¥ / big): Expands this idea into a larger circular
movement with footwork, not just upper body.
Two-person Improvised Movement: Partners practice
redirecting, neutralizing, and countering force while
stepping in a coordinated way. It develops sensitivity,
timing, and whole-body connection.
Developing Purpose: Helps practitioners understand how
to yield, follow, and counter while maintaining balance
and rooting, reinforcing Taiji principles in a more
dynamic format than stationary push hands.
In short, Da Lü is a stepping, partner-based Taiji drill
that teaches how to use rollback energy in a big,
flowing way.
